Artificial Pollination in Cocoa
Learn the practical technique of artificial cocoa pollination to boost your farm yield and income. Hands-on training at Kwadaso Agricultural College, open to all cocoa farmers, youth, and agri-entrepreneurs.
Course Overview
Cocoa is Ghana's most important export crop, and one of the most labour-intensive to manage well. Natural pollination in cocoa is notoriously inefficient, with only a small fraction of flowers successfully setting pods under natural conditions. Artificial pollination is a proven, practical technique that dramatically improves pod set rates, increases farm yield, and raises income for cocoa farmers without requiring expensive inputs or technology. Yet most Ghanaian cocoa farmers have never been trained in it.
Kwadaso Agricultural College's Artificial Pollination in Cocoa short course changes that. Designed for cocoa farmers, young agri-entrepreneurs, farmer group leaders, and extension practitioners, this intensive course gives you the practical knowledge and hands-on skills to apply artificial pollination correctly, consistently, and profitably on any cocoa farm. All training combines on-campus instruction with field practicals on real cocoa farms so that every technique is learned in context.
The course is built on KAC's strong cocoa sector relationships, including connections to CSIR, MoFA extension services, cocoa-sector NGOs, and farmer organisations across the Ashanti Region. You will not only learn the biological science behind cocoa flowering and pollination. You will learn how to organise pollination on a working farm, how to monitor results, and how to make artificial pollination a routine part of your production cycle rather than a one-off experiment.
Whether you are a cocoa farmer looking to improve your yield, a young person who wants to offer artificial pollination as a paid service to other farmers, a farmer group leader seeking skills to benefit your members, or an extension officer who wants to build practical capacity, this course equips you with a skill that has immediate, measurable results in the field

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I receive a certificate?expand_more
Yes. Every participant who successfully completes the course receives a KAC Certificate of Participation issued by Kwadaso Agricultural College. The certificate confirms your practical training in artificial pollination in cocoa and is recognised by agricultural institutions, NGOs, extension services, and cocoa-sector organisations in Ghana.
Do I need to own a cocoa farm to attend?expand_more
No. You do not need to own a cocoa farm to join this course. All practical training takes place on the KAC demonstration cocoa plot and at a partner farm visited during the course. The techniques you learn can be applied on any cocoa farm — whether it is your own, a family member's, an employer's, or a farm you offer services to as a paid pollinator.
Is the course taught in Twi?expand_more
Yes. The course is delivered in both English and Twi. All practical demonstrations are explained in both languages, and the course manual and field guide are available in both English and Twi so you can refer to them on the farm after the course.
Can I make money from this skill after the course?expand_more
Yes — and this is one of the most exciting aspects of this training. Day 5 of the course is dedicated to artificial pollination as a paid service opportunity. Many cocoa farmers are willing to pay a skilled person to pollinate their trees, especially during peak flowering periods when labour is scarce. The course gives you the skills, the tools from your starter kit, and practical guidance on how to price and offer your service. KAC can also connect you to farmers in our network who may need pollination services.
Can a farmer group attend together?expand_more
Yes — and group attendance is strongly encouraged. Farmer groups, cooperatives, and community associations that attend together can apply the technique collectively on their farms, support each other after the course, and are eligible for instalment payment arrangements. Contact the KAC Short Courses Unit to arrange a group registration.
How much can artificial pollination actually improve my cocoa yield?expand_more
Research by CSIR-CRIG and other cocoa institutions consistently shows that correctly applied artificial pollination can significantly increase pod set rates compared to natural pollination. The exact improvement depends on your farm conditions, the number of flowers pollinated, and how consistently you apply the technique. During the course, your facilitator will help you calculate a realistic yield projection based on your own farm situation.
Is accommodation available for participants from outside Kumasi?expand_more
Yes. On-campus accommodation is available for GHS 200 for the duration of the course. This is optional — participants who live in or near Kumasi can attend as day students. If you need accommodation, please indicate this when you register so we can confirm availability for your intake.
